International Women’s Day is marked and celebrated on the 8th of March each year. It began as a bid to eliminate discrimination against women worldwide, and to give them equal rights and opportunities in global development. She is a woman with myriad facets to her, being a mother, daughter, wife, homemaker, and so much more. Her strength, willpower, and determination know no boundaries and are unparalleled. This day sees the emergence of a new woman who stands in varied fields no matter how complex or challenging.

This day has always been an excellent way to recognize the significant achievements of women, but we must also use it to highlight continued inequities and barriers that prevent women from feeling seen, heard, valued, and empowered to fully participate

International Women’s Day goes back to the early 20th century, from the labor movements in North America and Europe when women were beginning to demand shorter working hours, better pay, and the right to vote.

Over the years, International Women’s Day has become a focal point in the movement for women’s rights and celebrates the remarkable achievements of women in different fields. It also serves as a reminder of the inequalities that still exist, and the ongoing efforts toward gender equality worldwide.

Some countries have extended the celebration to National Women’s History Month, or Women’s Month. It lasts throughout March and is dedicated to highlighting the contributions of women in history and contemporary society. It also provides an extended opportunity to discuss, celebrate, and advocate for women’s rights and issues.

Encouraging women’s empowerment is crucial for promoting gender equality. When women empower women, we have the potential to overcome social, political, and economic inequalities. Empowering women has a ripple effect on social progress, as women tend to invest more in their families and communities, leading to better outcomes for all.

Finally, by coming together on International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our collective commitment to dismantling barriers to equality and inclusion, and creating an environment where every individual can thrive. But I am clear that every day, not just one day of the year, belongs to women around the world.
